Herbs and supplements. Increasingly, people with sleep difficulties have been turning to herbal remedies instead of sedative-hypnotic drugs such as the BZDs. Melatonin (5-methoxy-N-acetyltryptamine), a hormone released from the pineal gland (a small pine-cone shaped structure in the brain) is essential in regulating circadian rhythms (approximately 24-hour intervals). In mammals, the melatonin rhythm is generated by an internal circadian clock in the hypothalamus region of the brain that is linked to the light/dark cycle of the 24-hour day.
Patient assistance programs (PAPs) are programs created by drug companies, such as JOHNSON & JOHNSON PATIENT ASSISTANCE FOUNDATION, to offer free or low cost drugs to individuals who are unable to pay for their medication. These Programs may also be called indigent drug programs, charitable drug programs or medication assistance programs. Most of the best known and most prescribed drugs can be found in these programs. All of the major drug companies have patient assistance programs, although every company has different eligibility and application requirements.
Haloperidol is a typical butyrophenone type antipsychotic that exhibits high affinity dopamine D 2 receptor antagonism and slow receptor dissociation kinetics. It has effects similar to the phenothiazines . The drug binds preferentially to D 2 and α 1 receptors at low dose (ED 50 = and mg/kg, respectively), and 5-HT 2 receptors at a higher dose (ED 50 = mg/kg). Given that antagonism of D 2 receptors is more beneficial on the positive symptoms of schizophrenia and antagonism of 5-HT 2 receptors on the negative symptoms, this characteristic underlies haloperidol's greater effect on delusions, hallucinations and other manifestations of psychosis. Haloperidol's negligible affinity for histamine H 1 receptors and muscarinic M 1 acetylcholine receptors yields an antipsychotic with a lower incidence of sedation, weight gain, and orthostatic hypotension though having higher rates of treatment emergent extrapyramidal symptoms .
